There are literally uncountable websites around the world. How many sites you can suspect while there are few hundred thousand of sites to steal your identity, do phishing and harm your computer or even worse. You might say hey I have an Anti virus or personal firewall installed in my computer and I am secure. But in that case you’ve spend enough money to secure your computer. Nevertheless not every time an anti virus or firewall software can detect a fake or low privacy site. Previously I’ve tried to use SiteAdvisor from McAfee the popular anti virus maker and Internet Explorer’s Phishing site checker but honestly both of them didn’t really fit my expectations. Then recently I’ve introduced to WOT (Web of Trust) software from one of my online contacts. WOT is a Mozilla recommended security add-on that also works with Internet Explorer and has been downloaded 3 million times. WOT addon warns you about risky websites to help you avoid spyware, browser hijacking, identity theft, phishing and other Internet scams. WOT is a user contributed site checker and comes with a huge database of known sites. This software comes in a flavor of plugin for Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, the 2 most used browser on the globe. It represents the safety marks in a ring format. Dark green is most safe and Dark red represents no safety at all. The colors are designed in Human behavior so it takes a less than a second to understand it. As long we understand Red light is No Go and Green light is a Go. Lets take a look at the features this product offers for Free: [More]

PhishGuard is a FREE service that detects and rapidly disables Internet "phishing" or "spoofing" attacks designed to steal critical financial data. PhishGuard works with all popular browsers on Microsoft Windows computers.
Phishing attacks use fraudulent websites and emails that mimic well-known organizations in order to trick unsuspecting Internet users. A simple login or account number entry screen becomes a sophisticated trap. By assuming you are dealing with a trusted party, you can reveal financial information including credit card numbers, bank accounts, passwords, and social security numbers to the "bad guys". This type of attack is very difficult for the typical person to detect, as the scammer’s emails and websites mimic the exact style and graphics of the spoofed company, and appear genuine. Sensitive financial information disclosed to scammers is used to make fraudulent financial transactions and to enable long-term identity theft.
Organizations recently impersonated by phishers have included eBay, Citibank, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), PayPal, AOL, Visa, Bank One, EarthLink, Microsoft, AT&T, Yahoo, Chase, and numerous others [More]

Interesting effort to get IE off of every computer in the known universe. These scripts essentially turn IE into a giant advertisement for Firefox and offers you a $1 referral fee for every person you convince to switch. Idealistic yet unrealistic? Sure, but think of how much fun you’ll have pissing off the IE dev team.

Maxthon became very quickly popular in Asia (awarded last year in Red Herring Asia ) and all over the world. The big difference with other browsers is that Maxthon is based on IE code which makes the software very familiar from the beginning but with a few twists. Unlike IE, it is very fast, safe and very stable and brings a unique browsing experience as it enables you to customize nearly any part of the software. Like Firefox, Maxthon brings tab browsing, embedded RSS and podcast reader (a very cool one), search bar… but without necessity to add any extension.
The key strength of Maxthon is that it enables you to customize totally your browsing experience with extreme simplicity. A few examples: URL shortcuts. Instead of typing a URL or clicking a bookmark (ok it takes less than 2 sec but still) you can set up a URL alias (”2″ for instance) and type directly in the URL bar which will lead you to the URL of your choice (eg: your flickr page). You can change easily skins, a wide choice is offered. Mouse gesture is also great just like super drag and drop features to save an image or initiate a search on a given word within web page.
There are too many features to cover them all here. I believe you should play with it first (tip: use your right click nearly anywhere). All those I know who tried it loved it. It sounds maybe too much like FireFox in some way but again it is not. To better understand the pros of Maxthon read this article from Internet Week.
